Martins & More with Spoon Phillips

Hi friends- we regret to inform you that recently, both of our day jobs have conspired to take away much of our free time. So much so, that we must take a long hiatus from podcasting. We’ll keep you posted when we know more. For now, THANK YOU for all the support & please enjoy our past episodes. We truly enjoyed producing them. This podcast features the conversation and opinions of musician T Spoon Phillips. A writer by trade, Spoon’s longtime association with professional musicians, luthiers, and music historians affords him a richly unique perspective on all things acoustic guitar. This includes decades of close friendship with executives and employees at C. F. Martin & Company, past and present, and the host of this podcast, Maury Rutch of Maury’s Music. Why would a guitar shop still be closed to the public in 2023? In today's episode we're discussing a topic that Maury found while watching Casino Guitars on YouTube. During the pandemic, guitar shops were forced to close their doors. Many learned to leverage their internet presence to make up for the lost foot traffic. Here at Maury's Music, we were already focusing almost all of our efforts online anyway. Now it's safe to allow customers to visit again, but some stores never pivoted away from the online-only model. We hope to begin scheduling appointments again sometime soon & the timing of the Casino Guitars video fits perfectly into our most recent episode. Why are some guitar shops still online only?  Or by appointment?  Sit back & relax as Maury & Spoon get their guitar shop chat on.

What if Guitar Center closes? YouTube is littered with doom & gloom Guitar Center videos everywhere you look. We're not going to pretend to be economics majors or reveal any real financial insight - but we do feel this subject deserves our attention - and we hope a healthy conversation about it might be worth your time as well. If guitar center does go under - how might that affect Martin? And their dealers? Sit back & relax as Maury & Spoon get their guitar center chat on.

Rosewood or Mahogany for strumming? In today's episode we're discussing a topic that's been both debated - and recycled, in the last few weeks. When it comes to tonewood preferences, do you prefer rosewood or mahogany for strumming? Maury made this the subject of episode 162 of "Guitar Store Virtual tour" back in June. Shortly after that live stream ended, he posed the same question on the Acoustic Guitar Forum. That thread quickly filled up with thoughtful replies & opinions - and that's what we'll be chatting about today. Sit back & relax as Maury & Spoon get their mahogany vs rosewood chat on.

Monday Jun 19, 2023

In today's episode, we're continuing last week’s discussion on the songwriting process. Over the years we've both penned a tune or two, and our pal John suggested that this topic could make a cool podcast episode. We shall see. :) We'll discuss some of our favorite songwriters, dive into the stories behind our songs, and we'll even include some brief sound clips of rarely heard recordings. Sit back & relax as Maury & Spoon get their songwriting chat on.
